All clubs are required to provide both junior and senior umpires for Net Set Go, junior, intermediate and cadet competition games every Saturday and we need your help to do this. The Illawarra District Netball Association has three categories of umpire.
All umpires will be required to complete the Rules of Netball Theory Exam (RONE) which tests the basic rules of the game.
The RONE is an online examination through Netball Learning that is accessible all year. A certificate is generated for all candidates who achieve a pass (70% or above). The most recent examination mark is the current result and pass marks are valid for 4 years.
It is highly recommended that prior to commencing this exam you read a copy of the Rules of Netball (2020).
It is recommended that all umpires join the Dapto Netball Club umpires Facebook group run by the Umpiring Co-ordinator. This page is used to post umpiring allocations, relevant umpiring information and allow open discussion for any questions umpires may have.
Umpire Dress Code
Every umpire is required to adhere to the umpire’s dress code. All umpires must be dressed in club colours (uniform) or umpire whites (white top and white or black bottoms), hair tied back and wearing joggers/runners.
All umpires will also be required to supply their own whistle, and hairband for centre-passes. It is recommended you also carry a rulebook.
The Dapto Netball Club is always looking for new umpires. The Club runs a new umpires program each season where the Umpiring Co-ordinator and the Club’s national badged umpires mentor new umpires. The Club also runs pre-season training for new umpires so that they are confident to umpire a game of netball prior to the first game of the season.
All new umpires will be mentored for at least three games by senior badged umpires – please note this may not be the first three rounds of the season, and is dependent on the number of new umpires we have as well as the allocations we are required to fulfill by Illawarra Netball.
New umpires will only umpire by themselves when the mentor believes they are confident enough to umpire on their own.
Umpires will also be coached and mentored for both improvement in their own personal performance, and to progress through district umpiring levels.
The Umpiring Coordinator will allocate games throughout the season and monitor the progress of umpires to ensure that umpires are allocated games within their ability.
All umpires will be paid for each game they umpire on a Saturday. Payment will depend on the age group umpired.

Approaching an Umpire
NO COACH, MANAGER OR PARENT is allowed to approach the umpires to seek clarification of a rule. Only the captain has the right to approach the umpires during an interval for clarification of any rule. Any player/s for whom the clarification is relevant may accompany the captain. In the event that the captain is not on the court, an on-court captain will be appointed and they can approach the umpires.
During a Match
If you are concerned about the quality of umpiring or the control of the game, you can ask your manager to go to Control and ask for a member of the IDNA Umpire Committee to attend the game. If it is required, the IDNA Umpire Committee member will provide support/feedback to the umpire/s.
We are always open to receiving feedback on our umpires. If you feel a Dapto umpire has done a great job we would also love to hear about it so we can let the umpire know. If you wish to contact the club, please email daptonetball@outlook.com.
Complaints
If you are unhappy with the performance of an umpire, either from Dapto or another club, you can contact the Umpire Coordinator or email the Club at daptonetball@outlook.com.
For further information on complaints please see our “Coaches & Managers” page.
